Cuba defended Palestine at the Security Council open debate on Peace through dialogue: contribution of regional, sub-regional and bilateral agreements to the prevention and peaceful settlement of disputes.

Ambassador Gerardo Peñalver Portal, First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Permanent Representative of Cuba to the United Nations, pointed out that Israel’s indiscriminate bombardment of the Palestinian population and the destruction of homes, hospitals and civilian infrastructure, as well as the deprivation of water, electricity and fuel services to the Palestinian population, must be stopped immediately.

He called for strict respect for the Charter of the United Nations, and pointed out that nothing can justify these actions, which constitute grave violations of International Humanitarian Law, and therefore an immediate ceasefire, access to humanitarian aid to the civilian population, as well as avoiding the forced displacement of Palestinians from the land that rightfully belongs to them.

“There can be no peace if atrocious violations of International Humanitarian Law are allowed, such as those committed by Israel, the occupying power, against Palestine”, emphasized the Cuban diplomat, who stressed the complicity of the United States in the commission of these war crimes, which is a “shameful attitude and sets a very dangerous precedent on the road to peace”.

Peñalver Portal recalled that, almost a decade after its promulgation, the Proclamation of Latin America and the Caribbean as a Zone of Peace, adopted in Havana at the Second Summit of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC), maintains its relevance and validity.

The document endorses the commitment of the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean to the peaceful settlement of disputes, in order to banish forever the threat and use of force in their international projection and in their relations among themselves.
