Cuban FM denounces U.S. obstruction to environmental mechanisms

HAVANA, Cuba, Dec 7 (ACN)

Bruno Rodriguez Parrilla, Cuban foreign minister, denounced today on Twitter that the United States is hindering mechanisms to finance losses and damages caused by climate change.

The Cuban diplomat pointed out that Washington’s attitude prevents fair compensation for the countries most vulnerable to climate catastrophes.

The final declaration of the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP 26) calls on rich nations to double by 2025 their financial contributions to help poor and vulnerable countries face the impact of climate change.

However, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres regretted that the political will at the meeting, held from October 31 to November 12, was not enough to overcome the deep contradictions.

On Sunday, Guterres warned on Twitter that those who contributed the least to the current climate crisis are those who suffer the most from its impacts, and urged the richest nations to significantly strengthen their support to developing countries.

Elba Rosa Perez, Cuban minister of science, technology and environment, said in her speech at COP 26 that at the root of this problem is the capitalist economic system, responsible for the predatory and consumerist development model, which is currently threatening to collapse human civilization.
