A Case for International Solidarity

“Solidarity only recognizes human needs and demands and places those who give and receive it in the highest echelon of our species; Solidarity will continue to be an indestructible weapon of struggle and at the same time a permanent and inexhaustible message of peace that cannot be silenced.”

7/17/23.Miguel Diaz Canel, Cuba’s President

Cuba: an example of internationalism and the potential to build a better world:
• Has an internationally recognized medical school, providing training for 10,000 students from 122 countries without cost.
• Sends medical teams to over 50 countries, serving poor communities lacking healthcare.
• Sent 400,000 military volunteers in response to Angola’s request for assistance in their fight for national liberation.
• Stands in solidarity with the Palestinian struggle for national self-determination and an end to Israeli occupation.
• Has eliminated illiteracy, guarantees universal healthcare, and promotes a national culture based on human solidarity.
• Adopted family code in 2022, recognizing same-sex marriage, confirms rights of LBGTQ, children, women, and individuals with disabilities.

Why does the US government falsely label Cuba a “state sponsor of terrorism” and impose economic and political sanctions? Cuba’s accomplishments after winning national independence and overthrowing capitalism make it a “bad example.” Its outstanding free healthcare system, free education through college and graduate school, and unequaled international solidarity. “No one has ever done more for Africa than Cuba,” Nelson Mandela
